The romance of John Smith and Pocahontas is one of the most famous legends in American history and the most commonly known in the history of Jamestown. However, historians now know that the romance never happened at all! So what is the real story of Jamestown? It is the story of a group of men and boys who come to America with dreams, but wind up trying desperately to survive in tidewater Virginia. These men faced sickness, starvation, mutiny, and attacks by the natives. Some of the worst dangers that they faced came from fighting within the ranks of their leaders, who were always trying to overthrow and outdo each other.

The narrator of this story is a fictional man named Jeremy Gower, who, when he realizes that he will not survive the winter, writes the tale of his years in Jamestown. Jeremy and his friends watch history unfolding around them, but the story that Jeremy tells is more than just a story of men making decisions that will affect the fates of nations. It is also a story of three young boys trying to make sense of the actions and choices of the adult leaders among them. This book illuminates a complex, exciting, and brutal period in the history of America.
