Cork City is the Republic of Ireland's second city. Corkonians call their city the Real Capital, a reference to the fact that Dublin as capital doesn't quite cut it in the credibility stakes when viewed from 250 kms down the road.
Cork city is located in Cork county also known as the rebel county. This has a lot to do with Corks major role in the independence movement during the early part of this century. Cork county occupies 1/6 of the area of the Irish republic, and is half the size of Northern Ireland. Indeed Dublin county would fit in Cork 7 times but who's measuring?
Cork city is built on a march. At one time the marshy area contained a number of Islands. These were gradually built on and linked together hiding all traces of what lay beneath except for the river Lee which borders the intimate city centre on the north and south sides. As you would expect bridges abound. There are 16 in total.
Cork city owes its origins to Saint Finbarre who is reputed to have lived in the 600s. The site of impressive St. Finbarres cathedral is where the monastic settlement thrived with European scholars coming to learn in this peaceful setting. The city proper emerged from one of the marshy islands on the river Lee with the arrival of the vikings in the 800s. The name Cork or Corcaigh in Irish translates as marshy ground.
Recently, Cork is being described as a rival to Dublin in terms of what it offers to the visitor but please don't take our word for it. Lets walk and see it.
