Translating Bob Hope's Jokes Into Mandarin and Cantonese For His 1979 Special From Peking

Excerpted from "THE LAUGH MAKERS: A Behind-the-Scenes Tribute to Bob Hope's Incredible Gag Writers"

by Robert L. Mills

Bob Hope was the first American entertainer allowed to perform in China following Nixon and Mao's opening of the Peoples Republic to the West in 1974.  For his 3-hour special taped in Peking and Shanghai in 1979, Hope for the only time in his career used an interpreter on stage with him.  This excerpt is the author's recollection of that historic July 4 evening at Peking's Capital Theater as one of Hope's script writers.  The excerpt is from his book on his seventeen years on the road with Hope entitled THE LAUGH MAKERS:  A Behind-the-Scenes Tribute to Bob Hope's incredible Gag Writers (c) 2009 from Bear Manor Media. (www.bearmanormedia.bizland.com/id370.html)

The book will soon be available in an audio version, read by the author, from Bear Manor Media.
