Description

Secularism has its roots in the world of the Greeks. The arrival of philosophy in Athens was accompanied by a deep skepticism concerning the Greek gods and Greek mythology. Some philosophers, like Plato, created an alternative religion. But some philosophers explored the possibility of a secular alternative. Democritus and Epicurus created their own radical schools and found many disciples. The secular teachings of Epicurus were embraced by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius. His extraordinary Concerning the Nature of Things is the first manifesto of secularism.
