Description
Born in Lithuania and educated in England, Berlin sought to understand the essence of the British society he admired. The English liberal tradition seemed so much less dramatic than the utopian visions of Plato and Marx. But Berlin saw true liberalism as the only feasible system for guaranteeing the dignity of most human beings. With no dogmatic truths and with the messy confrontation of individual opinions, the society of personal freedom promised no euphoric highs. But reasonable truth and expectations are preferable to illusions of perfection.
