World Community

World Community

1. Roots of Community

by Albert Anderson

In the modern world, the human community has been shaped and dominated by a few powerful national states. In the 21st the twenty-first century one superpower is playing an ever-larger role in forming a world community according to a single vision. Today economic forces, mass transportation, weapons of mass destruction, communications technology, political ambitions, and a host of related developments have brought us together as a species. But is this a benefit or a curse? To what extent does living in one world make human life better or undermine our wellbeing?
I will consider two fundamentally different visions of world community. In the first, a single nation presides over a global empire. The second view offers an idea of a common human community that preserves autonomy, mutual respect, and diversity. The ancient philosophical problem of the one and the many here takes the form of the tension between the inevitable tendency to unify and integrate human beings and the demand for individual consciousness, self-determination, and particularity in thinking and acting.
Is there a viable and desirable alternative to the form of nationalism that is currently creating a single world empire?
