Truth, Reality, and the Growth of Empire

The Philosopher King in Plato’s Republic and Hobbes’ Leviathan promise peace, order, and security, but they conceal the truth in order to build their empire. This podcast explores contemporary versions of justifying secrets and “noble lies.” Several recent books examine the secrecy, covert operations, spying, and deception that accompany the building of empire, especially the American Empire that currently runs more than 1,000 military bases throughout the globe. This form of imperialism is not the result of brute force but reflects a philosophy that emerged in Plato’s Athens, thrived in Machiavelli’s Italy and Hobbes’ England, and continues to appeal to the people at the center of power in Washington, D.C.
