The central figure in this election will be the president, George Bush, Jr. Although his first term began with the controversy over ballot counting, the ambivalence was resolved by the terrorist assault on the World Trade Center. The war on terrorism turned Bush into a forceful and popular president, especially after the quick victory in Afghanistan. But the War in Iraq triggered a reversal. The Bush presidency began to totter. There was the scandal with prisoners of war. There was the discomfort with the expansion of presidential power. There was the fear of the power of the religious right. Much of the public came to view the Bush presidency as a disaster. How realistic is this assessment?
