Using the Cosmopolitan Idea

The cosmopolitan idea provides a guide for thinking about a world community. It is not a plan or a blueprint but a final cause, an idea toward which we should strive to foster ethical and political values when we are thinking about major global issues. In the final podcast of this series on world community, I consider three examples of the kind of issues that would benefit from applying the cosmopolitan idea: global warming, crossing national borders, and nuclear proliferation. Individuals, sects, regions, nations, or any organization with a limited scope cannot resolve global issues of this kind. Kant and Plato both appeal to what is universal as the only way to address such concerns that pertain to all human beings.
