The Future of the American Empire

In this podcast I will assume that Chalmers Johnson, Noam Chomsky, and several others are right in claiming that the United States has established an empire that is seeking to dominate the world. The various people who make this claim have widely different views of the nature and purpose of the American Empire. However, they can be roughly grouped into two camps — those that think the American empire is a bad thing and those who think that it is a good thing. Johnson belongs to the first group, viewing the motives and practices of the U.S. empire builders in a negative light, arguing that greed, militarism, and tyranny characterize American imperialism. Niall Ferguson represents the second group, those who see empire as necessary for world order. I begin by taking a closer look at the positive case for the American empire, and I conclude by explaining why the American empire already seems to be in decline.
