The most promising alternative to building empires as a way of establishing order and security for the entire world is the cosmopolitan idea. Rather than a form of ideology, the cosmopolitan idea is grounded in the universal demand for autonomy and dignity for all human beings. Beyond the boundaries and interests of nation states and all local and regional organizations that seek to promote the interests of sects and parties, a small number of inviolable ethical demands pertain to all people. Whatever is ethically demanded of any person is, in principle, applicable to all people. In this podcast I explain how Kant and Plato share this vision of universal values.
