The Industrial Revolution turned the cities of the Midwest into giants of manufacturing. Millions of immigrants came from Europe and the South to provide cheap labor for the burgeoning factories. Ultimately, prosperity brought powerful unions that pushed the workers into the middle class. But nothing stands still. Globalization arrived to wreak havoc in the Midwest. Concise history of the Midwest, November 18, 2009

Sherwin, as usual, paints a broad, yet concise history of the Midwest
from the time of the first European contacts. I can't believe how little I understood about the history of this part of American.
