Casual Conversation with Mobile Industry Rock Stars

by Rob Woodbridge

We are in the middle of a land rush, only the land is untethered and undefined and no one really knows where the opportunities lie — except the entrepreneurs who are building them. I’m Rob Woodbridge and my goal here is to bring to light the great successes, failures and lessons and help move the innovation needle forward in mobility/wireless.

This is a pretty amazing time to be involved in wireless/mobility and the stories found here will both inspire and terrify but will hopefully guide you on your way to success as you build the tools that will add structure to the ether.

Where’s The Money? #12 – ‘The Instagram for Video’ Episode

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Thu, May 17, 2012

Welcome to our NEW newest show: “Where’s The Money?”. It is here we try to decipher the way some of the more popular mobile applications and services will generate cold hard cash. The industry is full of promise but only a handful of companies will crack the buck. “Where’s The Money?” is where we put them to the test. Today’s show is a little different from most “Where’s The Money?” episodes. Instead of looking at one individual app, today we tackle multiple apps trying to capitalize on the current ‘Instagram for video’ goldrush, including viddy and Socialcam. Relavent questions Rob and I try to answer: do ‘Instagram for video’ apps have a business model, or are they looking to be acquired? If the latter, which app is most likely to get bought and by whom (YouTube, CNN, Twitter, etc.)? Finally, does the viral growth of applications signify anything other than the reality that there are a lot of smartphones in the world? Rob and I do our best, but we’d like to hear what YOU have to say, so don’t hesitate to post your thoughts in the comments section.

Dan Martell: Why this relentless entrepreneur has turned his focus to mobile

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Tue, May 15, 2012

This is an epic episode with Dan Martell, entrepreneur, founder of Flowtown and Clarity, investor in GetAround, Udemy, Foodspotting and others, advisor to HootSuite, LocalMind, Massive Damage and others, proud New Brunswick, Canada native and the definition of hustle. What does it take to build out a string of successful mobile businesses and what does mobile mean to traditional business - that's where we start. Dan has some incredible insight into some of the top mobile companies that are challenging existing incumbents - he either invests in them or advises them. He's also turned his sights to his next startup, Clarity.fm, where he combines his passion for advising startups with mobile in a decidedly old-school, voice-first way. If you've heard of Dan, this episode will highlight the key tenants of being an entrepreneur. If you've never heard of Dan (shame on you!), this will be the defining UNTETHER.tv session and will immediately give you better business insight.

How publishers are leading the way in the HTML5 vs Native app debate - with InMobi's Carnet Williams

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Thu, May 10, 2012

There seems to be a shift happening for the first time since the promise of HTML5 landed on the mobile doorstep over 2 years ago. Companies are moving away from native apps and putting their full efforts behind the nascent promise of the latest "build once" language - and you'll be surprised at the companies that are leading the way. Fragmentation in mobile is an understatement these days and we are witnessing the effects of that as companies are trying to figure out the answer the the HTML5 vs. native app question. A number of publishers - including the Financial Times of London, Technology Review, NSFW and The Toronto Star - have moved over to HTML5 as their mobile publishing platform of choice instead of the costly alternative of native apps. Is this HTML5's debutante ball? Is this leading shift an indication of things to come? Is there a more definitive answer to that age-old question of when to go HTML5 and when to go native yet? That's why we tracked down Carnet Williams, founder of Sprout (an InMobi company) and HTML5 soothsayer from Bangalore, India to get answers these questions and more. Carnet's first episode on UNTETHER, Sprout: Why HTML 5 is the natural choice for in app advertising – with co-founder Carnet Williams, is the 5th most watched episode of all time. Enjoy!

How a mobile game is changing children’s eating habits – with Smash Your Food co-founders Marta and Frederic De Wulf

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Tue, May 08, 2012

We've come to realize very quickly that mobile can help change behaviour a number of ways. One of the largest behavioural influences mobile has brought forward is the democratization and gamification of learning - two trends that can only be good for both the industry and for education. One perfect example of this in action is nutrition. At one point a domain for experts, mobile is bringing a broader-than-base-level awareness and understanding of the foods we eat and their impact on our body. Now, with the help of iPad game Smash Your Food, you can help educate children on the perils of junk food. Smash Your Food was built by the husband and wife team of Marta and Frederic De Wulf and has recently won Michelle Obama’s Apps for Healthy Children award. If you've ever wondered what mobile's true impact can be you will want to watch this episode. How did this idea come to fruition - why they started down this path of nutrition education through mobile, what some of the lessons they learned as they started building, deploying and selling their application, why they put the focused effort they did into the production of the app and what their distribution strategy is. If you are interested in mobile or interested in understanding how mobile can become a powerful tool for mass education, sit back and watch this episode!

Where’s The Money? Episode #11 – Foursquare

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Wed, May 02, 2012

Today’s show was a tough one. As one of the first great ‘mobile first’ apps, foursquare is everything UNTETHER is about. It’s fun, beautifully designed, and changed the way the tech industry thought about location, gamification, and social. We LOVE foursquare. But it’s obvious that the company is at an inflection point. Replaced by Instagram as mobile darling of the moment, news of it’s growth in users and check-ins have been replaced by hard questions of revenue, which may be prompting rumours that foursquare is launching a paid ad service this June. Is this the right revenue path for the location kings? Has foursquare focused too much on serendipity and not enough on social? Why aren’t they acquiring Localmind? Are they seeking to become the feature of someone else’s product? If every mobile app is becoming an LBS app, is it possible that location is simply too big for any one company or service? These are the questions we seek to answer on WTM, while posing a few new ones to you, the audience. Check it out and don’t forget to post your thoughts in the comments.

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Mon, Apr 30, 2012

What does it take to launch a mobile application successfully? Forget the corner cases like Angry Birds and Instagram, most apps out there get released and wallow in obscurity. How can they break through? What needs to happen before, during and after the ideation, conceptualization, development and launch? This is what John Casey, founder of FreshFluff, talks us through based on the successful launch of the children's book app "David and Goliath" created by Jumping Pages. This is the story of how John's team changed the shape of the marketing efforts, launched this app to thunderous media coverage in non-tech press and learned some valuable lessons along the way. What does St. Louis Cardinals World Series MVP, David Eckstein have to do with this? It's all in here. Enjoy!

m-Pulse #13: The social impact of mobile with Anne Shongwe

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Tue, Apr 24, 2012

Developers, that's what we are focusing on now here on m-Pulse. All the challenges that developers must overcome in order to succeed in deploying apps and services into the mobile ecosystem. We are focused on the social entrepreneur today and ways mobile developers can attack a social issue with mobile. Our guest is Anne Shongwe, founder and CEO of AFROES in Pretoria, South Africa and both of us were enthralled with her story. She is a perfect example of how mobile can be used to change behaviour, educate and raise economies. Mobile may just be the single most important revolution developing countries have ever had. In keeping with our focus on the social good and mobile, Peggy implores you to participate in the Developer Economics Survey of 2012 - to make sure your voice is heard and Rob focuses on the need to think about social applications on more than one specified day of the year (this time around it was Earth Day). A special plug to Mobile Web Africa April 25-26, 2012. Follow them on twitter here. Our Goblet of Rock goes out to the folks building social applications around the world that are changing society for the better - including AFROES' Moraba game.

Why data is the new new frontier for mobile entrepreneurs - with INRIX Director of Communications Jim Bak

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Wed, Apr 18, 2012

Big data being delivered to small screens with layers of intelligence is where the future of mobile resides. Doesn't take a genius to see this but when you start to look at the things we use every day and how collecting the right data in the right context and using that to deliver the right outcome can benefit all of us (consumers, businesses, the environment) you quickly see how mobile will be central to innovation for years to come. So what about cars? The most prominent mobile device we use. How can mobile influence what we pay at the pump, reduce harmful pollutants, get us where we are going faster and contribute to urban planning? Listening to to Jim Bak, Director of Community Relations for INRIX, you will get the big picture of just how important and enabling mobile is becoming. Also, if you are an entrepreneur, you can't help but look at this space as the wild wild west - so much opportunity. After this conversation you will agree that we haven't really started yet...

Why mobile social discovery is the next emerging trend - with Glancee co-founder Alberto Tretti

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Mon, Apr 09, 2012

Mobile social discovery - the act of finding people around you that you know through your mobile device - is emerging as the next great service battle being fought today. Companies are tying location with our social graph (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc) with the hopes of creating pro-active serendipity and there are a number of companies that are vying for your network - Glancee is one. This is a real-world problem. Often times we are not optimizing our time at airports, events, games - anything social - and services like Glancee help make sure we don't miss the important people we want to meet with. Glancee's story is a good one - as most mobile/entrepreneur stories are. Alberto Tretti is the co-founder and, while we do talk about the industry, the product itself and his motivation for starting it, we spend an incredible amount of time on his decision process for deciding what features should be in the product (and thus, which shouldn't be in the product), as well as the importance of a great and simple user interface and user experience while designing the software. It is hard to build something that is easy to use. The best part of this segment is how he become a mobile entrepreneur. Enjoy!

While it may be true that each brand is unique in its product and goals, it’s also clear that major brands face the same challenges when it comes to mobile customer engagement. At the MEF Americas conference in Miami, Florida, I had the opportunity to speak with the mobile leaders of some of today’s biggest brands on mobile customer engagement, and learned that the opportunities are finely balanced with as of yet unanswered questions. How do brands move beyond awareness and adoption to extend the value of a customer experience? How do brands deal with the logistical realities of mobile growth, scaling and geographical borders in a digital world? The mobile leaders below discuss, but make sure to post a comment and let us know what you think. Enjoy! News media is under assault from all sides: From social companies like Twitter and Facebook to the blogging revolution and now mobile. Unlike the other platforms, mobile really brings the promise of social news, location based (highly localized) news and real-time feedback and engagement to every reader with a phone. This also brings incredible revenue opportunities and new business models, one of which is what Scoople is doing. Alain Mayer is the co-founder and CEO of Scoople - a mobile application that allows all of us to share our opinions about the news in real time - something that we've done inside of their product 150,000 times already. In this episode we shine the light on the future of news distribution, the impact of hyper local, the incredible power of real-time reader engagement and polling plus the sentiment layer and how that may just be the single most important piece of data we can collect. If you are involved in the news media business - be that radio, newspaper or television - this is a preview of things to come that will forever change those industries. Enjoy!

Thu, Mar 29, 2012

While it may be true that each brand is unique in its product and goals, it's also clear that major brands face the same challenges when it comes to mobile customer engagement. At the MEF Americas conference in Miami, Florida, I had the opportunity to speak with the mobile leaders of some of today's biggest brands on mobile customer engagement, and learned that the opportunities are finely balanced with as of yet unanswered questions. How do brands move beyond awareness and adoption to extend the value of a customer experience? How do brands deal with the logistical realities of mobile growth, scaling and geographical borders in a digital world? The mobile leaders below discuss, but make sure to post a comment and let us know what you think. Enjoy! Tom Daly, Director, Mobile & Search, Global Connections, Coca-Cola Joe Lalley, VP Digital Products, MTV John Orlando, EVP of WorldWide Marketing and Business Development, Sixth Sense Media Jeff Sawyer, VP Mobile & Connected Device Solutions, Turner

Where’s The Money? Episode #8 – Localmind

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Wed, Mar 28, 2012

Welcome to our NEW newest show: “Where’s The Money?”. It is here we try to decipher the way some of the more popular mobile applications and services will generate cold hard cash. The industry is full of promise but only a handful of companies will crack the buck. “Where’s The Money?” is where we put them to the test. This week we tackle Localmind, friends of the site, and makers of a nifty service that adds a dynamic social element to location-based discovery. Rob and I are big fans of the app, but with that fandom comes a variety of questions. Is Localmind a standalone application or the feature of another product (i.e., the perfect foursquare companion)? How can Localmind grow its user base? Is it a little too complex for mass adoption? Should Localmind monetize through small businesses, major brands, or by disrupting the tourism industry? In honor of the big questions above, and the ‘mind’ theme to the show, I turned on my Skype camera’s Big Giant Head mode for the duration of the podcast (we’ll iron out the technical glitches one day, I promise). Post a comment below and let us know your thoughts.

rwoodbridge@gmail.com (UNTETHER.tv)Author: UNTETHER.tv
Wed, Mar 07, 2012

This week's WTM? is quite daring, looking at new social serendipity app Highlight just one week after its worldwide launch, and days before it (supposedly) becomes the most talked about app amongst the technorati in Austin for SXSW. We also demo'd a new 'live-editing' tool on the back-end for the podcast, leading to some bandwidth choppiness at the start, but fancy transitions and titles throughout (let us know if you like it!). Highlight's nascence (and the fact that no one is using it yet) made for difficulties in understand just what type of path the app is on towards revenue, but Rob and I walked through possible outcomes following a strong SXSW showing. We also put Highlight into context with potential competitors Banjo and Sonar, and discuss the purpose of these apps in general. Question of the week: what experience do you want from your location-based social discovery apps, and are brands involved at all?
